October Report Cards, Part 2

Note: Records are prior to games on November 1st.

Nashville Predators (6-5-2)
Grade: C
Would it really be Nashville Predators hockey if we weren't talking about a sputtering offense and a pretty good defense? Seems like every year the Predators insist on trying to win every game 2-1 and all anyone ever talks about is how tough they are to play against. They need to work on maintaining leads in the next few games, as they blew a 3-0 first period lead in Phoenix the other night, losing 5-4 in a shootout.

New Jersey Devils (3-5-4)
Grade: D
Hard to make an argument for a group that's lost nine of 12 games so far and is towards the bottom of the NHL in scoring while also in the bottom half in defense. Given the dearth of offensive talent on this team, the power play has been pretty good, coupled with an average penalty kill. The signing of Ryane Clowe has not worked out for this team, as I expected.

New York Islanders (4-5-3)
Grade: C-
I still believe that the Islanders are a better team than their record indicates and what they've shown so far this season. They're putting the puck in the net and have been good on special teams so far, but last night's 57-shot effort in Ottawa aside they're not winning that battle and they haven't been able to keep the puck out of their net.

New York Rangers (5-7-0)
Grade: C-
They get a bit of a pass due to all the injuries they've sustained thus far, but they still haven't been playing good hockey. The offense hasn't hit its stride yet, though that's to be expected when it has yet to be at full strength. The special teams have been pretty good so far but the Rangers are the NHL's worst team at 5 on 5 this season.

Ottawa Senators (4-6-2)
Grade: D+
Yikes, there are a number of defensive issues with this team. They were already 28th in the NHL in shot differential before last night's -26 against the Islanders. Goal scoring hasn't been a problem for the Senators and they've also been pretty good 5 on 5 and on the penalty kill, so I expect them to turn it around soon. They just have to avoid the defensive breakdowns and sustain the forecheck better.

Philadelphia Flyers (3-8-0)
Grade: F-
Yes, the Flyers get an F-, the worst possible grade on this scale. Their grade is even worse than the Sabres, Panthers, and Oilers because Philadelphia was expected to have a bounce back year. They've been beaten soundly all over the ice and some of their best players haven't shown up yet this season. Not that it factors into their grade, but last night's 7-0 loss at home to Washington is a microcosm of the laughable failure this team has suffered.

Phoenix Coyotes (9-3-2)
Grade: B+
Phoenix is looking like a serious contender out west, and the shocking thing to me is that they're tied for third in the NHL in scoring. The defense hasn't been as sharp as we're used to seeing under head coach Dave Tippett, but aside from that they are firing on all cylinders. They have the most points by defensemen in the NHL, and the trio of Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Derek Morris, and Keith Yandle has combined for eight goals and 23 assists through the team's first 14 games.

Pittsburgh Penguins (9-4-0)
Grade: A-
Props to the Penguins for being the class of a bad division so far, because even with Evgeni Malkin's recent scoring drought they're still winning games. Jussi Jokinen has been on fire with six goals in October. Marc-Andre Fleury has been good, and it's really helped this team get settled in through the first month. The penalty kill has been a bit weak so far, but there's plenty of season left for that to improve.

San Jose Sharks (10-1-2)
Grade: A+
The Sharks are the NHL's best team through October, though fans in Colorado and St. Louis could easily make cases for their teams. Rookie Tomas Hertl has cooled off after his ridiculous start to the season, but now Joe Pavelski has the hot stick and it goes to show that their depth is their biggest weapon. Antti Niemi has been a brick wall in net, but I wonder if he's getting overused early on.

St. Louis Blues (7-1-2)
Grade: A
A light schedule in October has seen the Blues play just ten games (not including last night's win over Florida), but that hasn't stopped them from making quite an impression in the early going. If you haven't seen this team play yet, you need to fix that problem. Over the years I've never thought of the Blues as a particularly fun team to watch, but this season they are making me tune in regularly with their inspired play at both ends of the ice.

Tampa Bay Lightning (8-4-0)
Grade: B+
They've been impressive so far, but this is once again a stereotypical Lightning start to a season. They're always the team that comes out of the gate hot, but then as time goes on their defensive issues catch up to them and they fall back into the pack. All of their metrics look good except for the shot differential, where they've been outshot by 1.4 per game through the end of October. They need to get that number positive.

Toronto Maple Leafs (10-4-0)
Grade: A-
I had a feeling that the Leafs would be a solid team this season, but I didn't expect a 10-4 run through the first month of the season. There's a huge red flag with this team, though, and it's possession. The Leafs have been terrible in the faceoff circle and are 29th in the league in shot differential. However, they have won every game in which they outshot their opponent, and they are 4-2 in games that they have trailed after either the first or second period.

Vancouver Canucks (9-5-1)
Grade: B
This grade would be higher if John Tortorella hadn't already made their power play as horrible as he did the Rangers' during his tenure in New York. They're getting scoring from many sources, but not all at once and it has left them in the middle of the NHL in scoring. The penalty kill has been very stingy so far and Roberto Luongo is off to a nice start. They're headed in the right direction.

Washington Capitals (5-7-0)
Grade: C-
They don't deserve a higher grade than this for their play in October, but they get an A++ for their 7-0 win in Philadelphia last night (and it was without Ovechkin too). The problem for the Caps is even strength play; they're a minus in that department and it's led to their sub-.500 record even though their power play and penalty kill rank third and second, respectively.

Winnipeg Jets (5-7-2)
Grade: D
I think it's time to end things with Ondrej Pavelec. He's a bad goalie, and Al Montoya has played wonderfully in his limited playing time so far. Stands to reason that they should give Montoya more starts, right? The offense has not produced so far, the new acquisitions have not fit into the lineup well and the power play has been punchless. Their 44.1% on faceoffs is the second-worst in the league, only ahead of Calgary.

NHL Power Rankings- Week 4

* Note: This post was done before Saturday October 26th.

San Jose: San Jose is the best team in the early part of this season. Neimi looks like the Vezina candidate of last season and the Shark’s defense is limiting chances against. They have gotten points in 9 of 10 games and are tied for 2nd most in the NHL. The Goal Differential is also a huge plus for the Sharks at +23, the highest in the NHL.

Penguins: Sidney Crosby is on an insane start of the season having 18 points in 10 games and looks like to be the early favorite for the Art Ross Trophy. Marc-Andre Fluery has returned to his winning ways as he has played well during the early part of this season. With the return of former Norris Trophy Candidate, Kris Letang the Penguins will be a very dangerous team going forward.

Chicago: Before Thursday’s game against Tampa, the Hawks were only able to put up about 3 goals. With that in mind, the Hawks only have 1 regulation loss. This team is too good with players such as Toews, Kane, Hossa, and Sharp to only be average 3 goals a game. They will eventually start scoring more goals.

St. Louis: Since the last rankings, the Blues have had a very difficult schedule playing the Sharks, Hawks, Jets and Canucks. They were able to get points in 3 of the 4 games but only won 1 game. They are still one of the best teams in the West despite losing to a shootout in Winnipeg.

Colorado: With a league best record, Colorado continues to get points against very tough teams. Through 10 games, the combo of Varlamov and J.S. Giguere has the lowest GAA at 1.40. Many questioned the defensive ability of Colorado going into this season and right now, they have played very good defensive hockey. Patrick Roy is a good candidate for Coach of the Year.

Boston: Having won 4 straight games, the Boston Bruins are playing very good hockey. They have a +14 goal differential and the top line of Lucic, Krejci and Iginla is starting to click. The loss of Eriksson to Concussion puts a hole on their 2nd line but the Bruins should be fine and will continue to win until Eriksson returns.

Phoenix: The Yotes have played really good hockey and have been keeping pace with the difficult Pacific division. Despite the 7-4 loss to the Kings, the Coyotes have won most of their previous games and have scored about 4 goals a game. Also Goalie Mike Smith scored a goal; that helps too when your goalie can score.

Toronto: Comeback player of the year, Mason Raymond has contributed with solid secondary scoring while David Clarkson was serving his 10 game suspension. Now with Clarkson back, the Leafs will be a very dangerous team with a very good top 6 and some depth players that can help with scoring.

Ducks: The Ducks had 7 straight wins before losing to Toronto and Montreal earlier this week. They have won on great 5 on 5 hockey. The problem is that the team’s power play is one of the worst in the NHL. With players such as Getzlaf, Perry, Selanne and other, the power play shouldn’t be at the bottom of the league. If they can’t fix this, the Ducks might fall out of the playoff picture.

Los Angeles: The Kings has struggled as a team to play consistent hockey this year. They have alternated wins and losses for the past 2 weeks. They still have a solid top 6 led by Kopitar and Brown and Jonathan Quick is still one of the best goalies in the NHL. The Kings will find their way and return to their winning ways.

Vancouver: The Canucks have had a weird season. They have gotten wins but they haven’t played that well. The scored on themselves against the Canadiens and since that game, they have won 5 of 7, most of them in OT or S/O. This team has a very good top 6 and should be able to win games once Burrows returns from injury.

Montreal: Montreal has played well enough to still be in playoff position. They beat Winnipeg, Columbus, and the Duck but lost to Nashville, Edmonton, and San Jose. If they continue to play like this, it might be difficult for them to reach the playoffs. Carey Price will need to improve his play if they want to make it to the playoffs.

Nashville: With Pekka Rinne out for a month, it will be difficult for the Predators to make the playoffs. Seth Jones has proven he can play top minutes in the NHL and against high skilled guys. The Predators will need great goaltending from Carter Hutton and Magnus Hellberg if they will to stay afloat while Rinne is recovering from his injury.

Detroit: The Detroit Red Wings have hovered around .500 hockey this season and may continue to do so. They have some question on defense with the absence of Niklas Lindstrom who left 2 seasons ago. They should still make the playoffs by the end of the season but this could be an end of a dynasty.

Minnesota: After losing 3 straight on the road, the Wild were able to win against Nashville, Carolina and Chicago. With the injury to Jonas Brodin, the defensive unit will face more challenges. The Offensive unit led by Zach Parise and Mikko Koivu will have to keep scoring if they wish to continue their winning ways.

Columbus: After losing 4 straight against “playoff teams,” the Columbus Blue Jackets have beaten Vancouver, New Jersey, and Toronto averaging 4 goals a game and only letting in at most 2. Sergei Bobrovsky will have to continue is outstanding play if they wish to continue winning.

Carolina: Losing Cam Ward to injury will hurt the Hurricanes chances of winning games. With Ward out, Skinner, Pitkanen, and Khudobin are all injured. With so many key pieces out with injuries, it will be difficult for them to win games.

Ottawa: The Senators has struggled a bit losing 3 of their last 4. Craig Anderson will have to improve his play if the Senators want to make the playoffs. Robin Lehner might see more starts with the struggles Anderson is having.

New York Islanders: The Islanders have been playing .500 hockey these past few weeks and lost 3 of their last 4. They will continue to struggle with Nabokov letting more than 4 goals a game in those last 4 games.

Calgary: The Flames have returned back to normal as they have lost 4 of six these past 2 weeks. Karri Ramo and Joey MacDonald have both struggled and have GAA over 3 and SV% under .900. With both goalies struggling, the Flames will continue to see their way to the bottom of the standings.

Dallas: The Stars are playing .500 hockey and they have lost most of their last games played. Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin have led the offense both with 12 points. Kari Lehtonen has played well this season but only has 4 wins in 7 games but is injured. Dan Ellis and Jack Campbell have struggled leading to the multiple losses for the Stars.

Winnipeg: Ondrej Pavalec has struggled this season with a GAA over 2.5 and a SV% under .910. With only 4 wins in 12 games played, the Jets will only go as far as he carries them. The offense has been decent and the team has had goaltending and defensive issues.

Capitals: Alexander Ovechkin is on an scoring goals left and right. He has scored 10 goals in 11 games. The problem with the Capitals is that Braden Holtby has struggled and is unable to make easy stops. The Capitals should be one of the top teams in the Metropolitan division but due to Holtby’s struggles, they are not.

Florida: The Panthers have not played well and they have also had injury problems. Starting goalie, Tim Thomas is injured and it looks like Jacob Markstrom looks like he isn’t ready for full time NHL duties. Until Thomas returns, it looks like the Panthers will be an easy team to beat.

Tampa: Stamkos (18 points) and St. Louis(14) are leading this team offensively. Defensively, they have struggled and Ben Bishop has played alright but has enough offensive support to win games as he has let in more than 2 goals in the past 3 games.

Edmonton: Devin Dubnyk has struggled and is like swiss cheese. He has let in a lot of goals and the Oilers are not playing good defensive hockey. With Taylor Hall out for a few more weeks, the offense might struggle but they should be fine with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, David Perron, Jordan Eberle, and Nail Yakapov.

New Jersey: They finally got their 1st win of the season when the beat the Rangers 4-0 last Saturday. They play Boston tonight and other than that 1st win, they have struggled. Cory Schneider is out so Brodeur will have to play great to make sure they win some games.

New York Rangers: The Rangers have played pretty bad during this 9 game road trip. They have lsot against teams they could of beaten and they end their trip against a good Detroit Team. With Lundqvist injured, they will have to rely on rookie Cam Talbot with Martin Biron retiring.

Buffalo: The Young Sabres team has struggled and have lost most of their previous games. If they continue to lose, it looks like they will make a move to acquire more draft picks to improve their future.

Philadelphia: The Flyers have struggled this season but were able to beat the Rangers on Thursday. They play the Islanders tonight and they will need Claude Giroux to step his game up and start scoring some points if they wish to remove themselves from the bottom of the Metropolitan Division.

October Report Cards, Part 1

Note: Records are prior to games on November 1st.

Anaheim Ducks (10-3-1)
Grade: B+
It's nothing short of a miracle that Anaheim has notched 21 of a possible 28 points with their special teams being this bad. They cannot sustain this streak if the power play and penalty kill continue to falter. I don't care how good their other metrics are, when you don't punish teams for committing penalties and don't bail yourself out when shorthanded, you're not going to see long-term success.

Boston Bruins (8-4-0)
Grade: B+
An uncharacteristically sloppy penalty kill is the story here. Boston is getting enough goal scoring and playing stellar defense as usual, but that PK needs a boost. Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand are off to slow starts, but the slack has been picked up by David Krejci (11 assists) and Milan Lucic (12 points) thus far. They suffered a tough loss to Pittsburgh the other night but rebounded nicely in a shootout win over Anaheim.

Buffalo Sabres (2-12-1)
Grade: F
I really didn't want to give this team an F simply because this is a rebuilding year and many correctly pegged this team to be the worst in hockey, but after scanning their stats I couldn't justify giving them a better score. If the PK were in the top ten I probably would've bumped them to a D- on the grounds that they were doing something right. However, 82%, while serviceable, isn't anything to celebrate. Trading Thomas Vanek for Matt Moulson was a complete fleece job by Darcy Regier as he continues to stockpile picks.

Calgary Flames (5-5-2)
Grade: B-
Was going to give them a higher grade until I saw the defense and special teams. Make no mistake, their record is still a surprise to me (hence the probably inflated B-), but it's a far cry from their hot start in the first few games. Sean Monahan has been the catalyst for this group, though he's disappeared a bit in their last few outings. They need to get him going again. They also need to figure out the goaltending situation, because the committee so far hasn't gotten it done.

Carolina Hurricanes (4-5-3)
Grade: D+
They should thank the rest of the Metropolitan Division (sans Pittsburgh) for being so putrid this season, because somehow the 4-5-3 Hurricanes are in second place. Nobody has reached double digit points yet and only four players have a plus rating. The goaltending has quite literally been a three-ring circus, with Cam Ward and Justin Peters faltering while Anton Khudobin has been sharp. Khudobin's on IR now though, so Ward and Peters have to play better... Ward especially, since he's the starter.

Chicago Blackhawks (8-2-3)
Grade: B+
They're scoring, they're converting on the power play, and they're getting a lot of pucks to the net. Defense has been an adventure so far, though, with the NHL's worst PK not helping matters. You can only mask bad defense with good offense for so long, but if the Hawks are driving possession and applying a solid forecheck, the penalty kill numbers will come up some.

Colorado Avalanche (10-1-0)
Grade: A
This team was doing everything right until Semyon Varlamov turned himself in to police amid charges of kidnapping and domestic violence. Backup Jean-Sebastien Giguere has been great so far, so it looks like the Avs will be alright for the time being in net. Who would've thought they'd be 10-1 through the first month and that it would be the defense that got them there? The trade that brought in Max Talbot will only help them continue to be solid in their own end.

Columbus Blue Jackets (5-6-0)
Grade: C
The Blue Jackets look like a team that is just trying to stem the tide right now. They're still without Nathan Horton for the foreseeable future so they will be missing a major offensive weapon going forward, but even at 5-6 they're right in the thick of it in the Metropolitan Division, where they sit in 4th place. They have to improve the special teams and find some more scoring, but if they're above .500 when Horton comes back, look out.

Dallas Stars (5-6-1)
Grade: D+
Given the fact that the Central Division has delivered in terms of being iffy in the middle, the last-place Stars don't deserve any better of a grade. They're 1-2-1 against their division rivals thus far and that will not get it done. They've been the model of mediocrity to this point in the NHL and have to improve in all areas of the game if they want to climb up the mountain. I believe it's an issue of depth with this team, as they simply don't have enough on the wings or on defense.

Detroit Red Wings (7-4-2)
Grade: C+
Let me put it this way: this team is not trending in the right direction. The offense has not produced, they've gotten almost nothing from Stephen Weiss so far, and the special teams have been meh. Defensively, they've been good enough to have a winning record, but again the scoring isn't there. Detroit has just 20 points from its defensemen so far, led by Niklas Kronwall with eight. They need more from the backend.

Edmonton Oilers (3-9-2)
Grade: F
This team has been a complete trainwreck after such high hopes to begin the year. Taylor Hall is hurt, Nail Yakupov has been nonexistent, the defense has continued to suck as only they can, and the special teams continue to not produce. This squad is doing nothing well right now. Mark Arcobello is off to a nice start with 10 assists, but when he's tied for your team's lead in scoring, there are serious issues that need to be addressed.

Florida Panthers (3-7-2)
Grade: F
This grade is another case of me wanting to be soft on a team that everyone knew was bad preseason but being unable to justify it. The Panthers have been absolutely brutal so far. Tim Thomas has not been healthy and it's been clear that his body isn't in playing shape yet. Brad Boyes has slowed down, Jonathan Huberdeau hasn't gotten untracked yet and Shawn Matthias is struggling. They need more from their best players.

Los Angeles Kings (9-5-0)
Grade: B
They're currently sitting in fifth place in the stacked Pacific Division, but that's no reason to count the Kings out. Aside from their goal scoring, they've been solid overall. Anze Kopitar is off to a great start and the defense has both kept them in and won games. They'd like to see an increase across the board; these are not the numbers of a Stanley Cup contender. However, they don't need to be yet, that can wait until the playoffs.

Minnesota Wild (6-4-3)
Grade: B-
I can't figure this team out. They aren't scoring, but have a great power play. The defense has been stingy, but the penalty kill has been a sieve. Josh Harding has played admirably in net so far, but this team needs Nicklas Backstrom to be healthy and playing his best hockey if they're going to improve upon their success from a season ago. Also, where has Dany Heatley been? Has anyone seen him?

Montreal Canadiens (8-5-0)
Grade: B+
With the statistics that they've put up across the board, Montreal should probably have a better record than they do. They're trending in the right direction, but they need to get more pucks to the net. It's going to be tough to maintain such a low goals against average, so the more they can help out the goaltending by driving possession, the better off they'll be.
